Fig. 67: THE MUGHAL EMPEROR FARRUKHSIYYAR (1713-19), Mughal, c. 1715. Two wars of succession followed the death of Aurangzeb, one in 1707 which brought Bahadur Shah I to the throne, and another on his death in 1712, when Jahandar Shah was temporarily victorious. Farrukhsiyyar was the son of Azam ush-Shan, one of the brothers defeated and killed by Jahandar in 1712. He raised an army in the east and marched victoriously on Delhi, having his defeated uncle strangled and his body left outside the Red Fort to rot. Opague watercolour and gold, 19.6 x 11.7 cm.
